What is the difference between Inconel 600 and Inconel 601?
Inconel 600 and Inconel 601 are very common superalloys. Both alloys have good high temperature properties. Among them, Inconel 601 adds more chromium elements based on Inconel 600. Therefore, their main difference lies in their antioxidant properties.
Inconel 600 Description
Alloy 600 is a nonmagnetic, nickel-based high temperature alloy possessing an excellent combination of high strength, hot and cold workability, and resistance to ordinary form of corrosion. This alloy also displays good heat resistance and freedom from aging or stress corrosion throughout the annealed to heavily cold worked condition range. Some typical applications are: Barge and tank truck liners/Carburizing atmospheres/Ethylene dichloride crackers/Furnace trays, mufflers, hangers.Alloy 600 is not an age hardening alloy; cold working is the only available means of hardening. Softening by annealing begins at about 1600°F (871°C), and is reasonably complete after 10 to 15 minutes of heating at 1800°F (982°C). Above this temperature, grain growth may be objectionable, although very brief heating at 1900°F will cause complete softening without undue grain growth. Since the rate of cooling has no effect on the softening, the material may be water quenched or air cooled.
Inconel 600 Description
INCONEL alloy 601 is a general-purpose engineering material for applications that require resistance to heat and corrosion. An outstanding characteristic of INCONEL alloy 601 is its resistance to hightemperature oxidation. The alloy also has good resistance to aqueous corrosion, has high mechanical strength, and is readily formed, machined and welded. The limiting chemical composition of INCONEL alloy 601 is listed in Table 1. The composition is a facecentered-cubic solid solution with a high degree of metallurgical stability. The alloy's nickel base, in conjunction with substantial chromium content, provides resistance to many corrosive media and hightemperature environments. Oxidation resistance is further enhanced by the aluminum content. The properties of INCONEL alloy 601 make it a material of broad utility in such fields as thermal processing, chemical processing, pollution control, aerospace, and power generation. Alloy 601 is a standard material of construction for various types of thermal-processing equipment.

The difference between Inconel 600 and Inconel 601
As can be seen from the above ingredients, the control standards for sulfur, silicon and manganese in Inconel 600 and Inconel 601 are the same. Sulfur, silicon and manganese are harmful elements in superalloys in most cases. They greatly affect the transient and creep properties of the alloy. The purity of both alloys is very good and the levels of transient and creep properties are the same.
In orrosion resistance:Inconel 601 has less nickel than Inconel 600, instead it has more chromium with some added aluminum. Nickel plays a very good role in the corrosion resistance of alloys. However, this anti-corrosion effect is relatively limited in resistance to oxidizing environments.
Chromium is a very good antioxidant element. Chromium can form an oxide film on metal surfaces when exposed to oxygen. This oxide film prevents further oxidation of the alloy. This is why almost all super alloys have chromium added. The large amount of chromium in Inconel 601 ensures that its oxidation resistance (especially high temperature oxidation resistance) is much better than Inconel 600. The added aluminum element can also increase the oxidation resistance of the alloy. In mechanical behavior: Inconel 600 and Inconel 601 are both solid solution strengthened alloys. Apart from nickel, chromium and aluminum, the chemical composition of the two alloys is virtually indistinguishable. Therefore, in the same state (solution processing), the mechanical properties of the alloys are almost the same without any significant differences.
In physical properties: The physical properties such as density, melting range, magnetic permeability and Curie temperature of Inconel 600 and Inconel 601 are also different, but the difference is not significant. Both Inconel 600 and Inconel 601 are widely used in automotive, chemical processing, resistance, welding products and other fields. However, since Inconel 601 is mainly used to improve the oxidation resistance of the alloy, its other corrosion resistance is not as good as Inconel 600. This also results in Inconel 601 being used in some specific situations, and its application range is not as wide as Inconel 600. Both Inconel 600 and Inconel 601 support seamless pipes, welded pipes, capillary pipes, coiled pipes, thick-walled pipes, elbows, flanges, reducers, tees, pipe caps, round rods, flat rods, square rods, hexagonal rods, and plates , coils, strips, wires, poles, filler metals, welding rods and other products in various forms.
