ASTM B167 Inconel 601 Nickel-Based Alloy Seamless Pipe

1. What is the chemical composition of Inconel 601 (UNS N06601)?

Inconel 601 is a nickel-based alloy with about 58–63% nickel, 21–25% chromium, and up to 1.5% aluminum, with small amounts of iron, copper, and trace elements. The addition of aluminum improves oxidation resistance at elevated temperatures.

2. What are the typical applications of Inconel 601 seamless pipes?

These pipes are commonly used in high-temperature environments such as industrial furnaces, heat-treating equipment, petrochemical processing, catalyst support grids, power generation boiler tubes, and gas turbine components.

3. What temperature range can Inconel 601 pipes withstand?

Inconel 601 offers excellent performance up to around 1200 °C (2200 °F). It maintains good mechanical strength and oxidation resistance at elevated temperatures, making it ideal for continuous exposure to heat.

4. How does Inconel 601 compare to stainless steel in terms of performance?

While stainless steels like 304 or 310S provide good corrosion resistance, Inconel 601 far outperforms them in extreme high-temperature and oxidizing environments. Its aluminum content gives it superior scaling resistance that stainless steels cannot match under prolonged high-heat exposure.

5. What standards and testing apply to ASTM B167 Inconel 601 pipes?

ASTM B167 specifies seamless nickel and nickel-cobalt alloy pipes and tubes. Inconel 601 seamless pipes under this standard must undergo hydrostatic testing, nondestructive examination (NDE), and chemical/mechanical property testing. Certificates are typically issued according to EN 10204 3.1 or 3.2 to verify compliance.
