Monel socket weld flanges have a lower carbon content and small additions of aluminum and titanium to provide excellent performance over a wide temperature range. The addition of small amounts of aluminum and titanium results in a Monel socket weld flange with the same corrosion resistance, but with much greater strength due to the formation of gamma-rays when aging. The surface wear resistance of flame-hardened medium steels such as Monel socket weld flanges may be poorer than a carbon-rich shell of carburized metal of the same hardness.

The mechanical properties of commercial pure Monel forged socket weld flanges are controlled by "alloying" to various oxygen and nitrogen levels to obtain strength levels.
