Niobium (Nb), formerly known as columbium, is a chemical element with atomic number 41. It is primarily a malleable, gray, soft transition metal. The main commercial source of niobium is the mineral pyrochlore. Name originates from Greek mythology; or Niobe, daughter of Tantalus.

Other applications of niobium include welding, nuclear industry, electronics, optics, coins and jewelry. In the latter two applications, niobium's low toxicity and ability to be colored by anodization are particular advantages. Coating glass with ultrafine niobium powder improves the glass's ability to transmit light without absorbing or refracting it. The coating also makes the glass more resistant to glare. Niobium-coated glass is used in camera lenses and television and computer screens.
