The need for high-performance, lightweight space propulsion systems has led to rapid research into refractory metals that can withstand high stress levels at high temperatures and also have a low ductility-to-brittle transition temperature to withstand high frequencies at low temperatures vibration. Metals that meet these requirements are niobium-based alloys. The C-103 was selected to meet the original design requirements because of its excellent manufacturability. C-103 is considered the most "forgivable" niobium alloy from a welding and forming perspective. The hardware, which was welded and coated to form TIG weldments up to 600 inches (1524 cm) in length, was subjected to 2T bending at -195°C (-320°F) after the equipment completed its duty cycle.

Although it is considered a first generation alloy, following Nb-1 Zr, C-103 was developed to replace weaker alloys but retain the required forming properties and welding properties. Due to its excellent mechanical properties at all temperatures, this niobium-hafnium titanium alloy is suitable for most rocket engine applications at temperatures up to 1482°C (2700°F). Extensive testing of coated components has shown that niobium's reliability significantly reduces project costs as these components are subjected to up to ten times the number of duty cycles. Niobium also allows for significant weight savings compared to many other rocket engine design materials. Metal Technology has over 35 years of experience forming, forging, welding and machining niobium alloy C-103. It is one of our preferred materials for processing.
