What Is Hastelloy C276 Used For?

What is hastelloy C276 used for?

Hastelloy C276 is a tungsten-added nickel-molybdenum-chromium superalloy designed to provide excellent corrosion resistance in a variety of harsh environments. The high nickel and molybdenum content make nickel steel alloys particularly resistant to pitting and crevice corrosion in reducing environments, while chromium provides resistance to oxidizing media. The low carbon content minimizes the precipitation of carbides during welding to maintain the corrosion resistance of the welded structure. This nickel alloy resists the formation of grain boundary deposits in the welding heat affected zone and is therefore suitable for most chemical process applications under welding conditions.

Although there are many variations of Hastelloy, Hastelloy C-276 is by far the most widely used.

Alloy C-276 is widely used in the harshest environments including chemical processing, pollution control, pulp and paper production, industrial and municipal waste treatment, and sour natural gas recovery.

Corrosion Resistant Hastelloy C276
Hastelloy C-276 is considered one of the most versatile corrosion-resistant alloys, exhibiting excellent resistance to a variety of chemical process environments, including ferric and copper chlorides, thermally contaminated organic and inorganic media, Chlorine, formic and acetic acids, acetic anhydride, sea water, brine and hypochlorite and chlorine dioxide solutions. In addition, Alloy C-276 resists the formation of grain boundary precipitates in the welding heat-affected zone, making it useful in most chemical processes under welding conditions. The alloy has excellent resistance to pitting corrosion and stress corrosion cracking.

What are the characteristics of Hastelloy C276?
Excellent corrosion resistance in reducing environments
Excellent resistance to strong oxidizing salt solutions such as ferric chloride and copper chloride
High nickel and molybdenum content provides good corrosion resistance in reducing environments
Low carbon content minimizes the precipitation of grain boundary carbides during welding to maintain corrosion resistance in the heat affected zone of the welded joint
Resistant to localized corrosion such as pitting and stress corrosion cracking
One of the few materials able to withstand the corrosive effects of wet chlorine, hypochlorite and chlorine dioxide
