The nickel content of approximately 38-46% is high enough to enable the material to withstand chloride ion stress corrosion cracking. Nickel also works well with molybdenum and copper, providing excellent resistance to reducing environments, including the presence of sulfuric and phosphoric acids.

Molybdenum is a useful addition to alloys because it provides great strength, but it also helps resist pitting and crevice corrosion. Earlier this year, we published a dedicated article on our blog detailing the benefits of molybdenum in more detail. The alloy's high chromium content (19.5-23.5%) (another element we've covered in more detail) helps the material resist oxidizing elements such as nitric acid, nitrates, and oxidizing salts.

Finally, titanium (0.6-1.2%) is added to balance the composition and, with the correct heat treatment, stabilizes the alloy and helps prevent intergranular corrosion sensitization.

All of these different elements work together to provide broad corrosion resistance, making INCOLOY Alloy 825 useful in many environments.

Application areas
INCOLOY 825 alloy is used by many industries due to its impressive corrosion resistance. For example, it is frequently used in chemical processing, pollution control, oil and gas recovery, acid production, pickling operations, nuclear fuel reprocessing, and radioactive waste disposal.

It can be found in the mining industry in screening lines used to screen mineral particles. Due to its exceptional resistance to sulfuric and phosphoric acids, it is often the material of choice for oil and gas well piping.

It is widely used throughout the oil and gas extraction industry, where materials are exposed to extremely corrosive media and high temperatures. In addition to the extraction equipment itself, INCOLOY Alloy 825 can be used in processing equipment for LNG production to separate the extracted fluids.

Other areas where the alloy excels are in environments containing sulfur fumes, acid gases and seawater, all challenging conditions that present different corrosion issues.
