ASTM SB163 UNS N02200 Pipes for cooling systems in power plants

ASTM SB163 UNS NO2200 pipe, also known as Nickel 200, is used in power plant cooling systems due to its excellent corrosion resistance, high thermal conductivity, and durability, particularly in corrosive or high-purity environments. Key considerations include the material's high cost, its temperature limitation to below 600°F (315°C) to prevent graphitization, and its excellent performance in heat exchangers and condensers.

What is the difference between Nickel 200 and Nickel 201?

Both Nickel 200 and 201 are commercially pure wrought nickel alloys with excellent corrosion resistance and electrical conductivity, but the primary difference lies in their carbon content, which makes 201 more suitable for high-temperature applications. Nickel 200 has a maximum carbon content of 0.15%, so it can only be used below 600°F (315°C) to avoid embrittlement caused by graphitization. Nickel 201 has a lower carbon content (maximum 0.02%), making it more suitable for use above 600°F (315°C).

Important Limitations and Considerations
Temperature Limitations: Its operating temperature is typically below 600°F (315°C). At higher temperatures, the material may graphitize, severely affecting its performance.
Cost: As a high-purity nickel alloy, it may be more expensive than standard carbon steel pipe, but its long-term performance and reliability in specific applications justify the cost.
Fabrication: While it can be welded and fabricated, understanding its properties is essential for proper construction.

Typical Applications in Power Plants
Condensers: Its high thermal efficiency is essential for efficient steam cooling.
Heat Exchangers: Facilitates heat transfer between dissimilar fluids.
High-Purity Fluid Handling: Used when fluid purity must be maintained.
