The Impact Toughness of Monel Alloys

Impact toughness change trend at low temperatures

Unlike carbon steel and some low-alloy steels whose impact toughness drops sharply when the temperature falls below the ductile-brittle transition temperature, Monel alloys (represented by Monel 400 and K-500) have no obvious ductile-brittle transition temperature in the temperature range from room temperature down to -253°C (liquid hydrogen temperature). Their impact toughness either remains at a high level or shows a slight increase with decreasing temperature.

For example, the Charpy V-notch impact toughness of Monel 400 at room temperature is about 180–220 J. When the temperature drops to -196°C (liquid nitrogen temperature), its impact toughness can still be maintained above 150 J, far exceeding the minimum toughness requirement for structural components.

Root cause of resistance to low-temperature embrittlement
Monel alloys are single-phase face-centered cubic (FCC) solid solution alloys composed mainly of nickel and copper. The FCC crystal structure has a large number of slip systems, which can effectively accommodate plastic deformation even at extremely low temperatures, avoiding the brittle fracture caused by the limitation of dislocation movement. In contrast, metals with body-centered cubic (BCC) structures (such as ordinary carbon steel) are prone to dislocation locking at low temperatures, leading to a sharp decline in toughness.
Engineering application implications

The excellent low-temperature toughness of Monel alloys makes them the preferred material for cryogenic engineering, such as liquid natural gas (LNG) storage and transportation equipment, liquid hydrogen/liquid oxygen fuel system components of rockets, and low-temperature valves and pipelines in cryogenic refrigeration systems. They can ensure the structural integrity and safety of components under long-term low-temperature service conditions.
