4140 Hot Rolled Heat Treated Round Bar
4140 is a widely used medium carbon steel. It is a general purpose alloy with good strength, toughness and hardness. It is called chrome-molybdenum steel because it contains 0.95% chromium and 0.20% molybdenum alloying elements.

4140 heat treatable alloy is a chromium-molybdenum medium carbon alloy steel used in a wide variety of applications requiring high strength and toughness. The chromium element gives it good hardness penetration, while the molybdenum element provides hardness uniformity and strength. In the heat treated or pre-hardened state, it has a Rockwell C hardness between 26-32 and is stress relieved to minimize warping during processing. Local hardness can also be obtained by flame or induction hardening. 4140 is mainly used in bending machine dies and is also an ideal choice for applications that require higher toughness than mild steel. Other typical applications include: bolts, dies, stripper plates, slides, ejector plates, clamps, fixtures, punch plates, drill collars, couplings, axles, valves, machine shafts, reamer bodies, machine blocks.

FAQ

Is 4140 alloy steel corrosion resistant?
Although 4140 steel contains chromium to improve corrosion resistance, it is not highly resistant to corrosion. Appropriate coatings or protective measures are recommended for use in corrosive environments.
What is the difference between 4140 and 4340 alloy steels?
4140 steel has a lower carbon content than 4340 steel, making it easier to machine. However, 4340 steel has higher strength and toughness, especially in larger sections, and is often used in heavy-duty applications.
Can 4140 alloy steel be welded?
Yes, 4140 steel can be welded using the proper welding techniques and precautions. However, post-weld heat treatment may be required to restore its properties, especially in the heat-affected zone.
