What is the difference between Hastelloy B2 and C22 Alloy?

Hastelloy B2 is primarily used in reducing environments and has excellent resistance to hydrochloric acid and other non-oxidizing acids. Hastelloy C22 is a more versatile alloy that is resistant to both oxidizing and reducing environments, making it suitable for a wider range of applications, including those involving chlorides, pitting and crevice corrosion.

What is Hastelloy B2?

Hastelloy B2 is a nickel-molybdenum alloy with excellent resistance to reducing environments such as hydrogen chloride gas as well as sulfuric, acetic and phosphoric acids. Hastelloy B2 is resistant to pure sulfuric acid and a wide range of non-oxidizing acids.

What is the difference between B2 Alloy and C276 Alloy?

Hastelloy B2 and Hastelloy C276 are both excellent alloys, each with unique properties for different applications. Hastelloy B2 excels in resisting corrosion from reducing acids, while Hastelloy C276 exhibits excellent resistance to a wide range of corrosive media.

Which is better, C22 or C276?

C276 is more resistant to oxidation, while C22 is more efficient in reducing environments. In addition, C22 has better fabrication and welding characteristics, making it easier to process into complex shapes. In terms of cost, C22 is slightly higher than C276.

Hastelloy B2 vs C22 – What's the Difference?

Hastelloy B2 vs C22 – Compositional Analysis

Hastelloy B2 is a nickel-molybdenum alloy with a nominal composition of approximately 63% nickel, 28% molybdenum, with the remainder made up of various additives such as iron, chromium and cobalt. This composition gives Hastelloy B2 excellent resistance to reducing acids, especially hydrochloric acid.

Hastelloy C22, on the other hand, is a more complex alloy containing significant amounts of nickel, chromium, molybdenum, tungsten and iron. The addition of chromium and tungsten enhances the corrosion resistance of C22, especially for oxidizing acids (such as nitric acid) and mixtures of oxidizing and reducing acids.

Hastelloy B2 vs C22 – Mechanical Properties

The mechanical properties of Hastelloy B2 and C22 also differ, reflecting their different compositions. Hastelloy B2 has good ductility and toughness, making it suitable for a variety of forming operations. It also has excellent welding characteristics and can be easily welded into complex structures.

On the other hand, Hastelloy C22 has slightly higher strength and hardness than B2. This enhanced strength makes C22 a good choice for applications that require higher mechanical loads. However, it is worth noting that the increase in strength may come at the expense of a slight decrease in ductility.
