The difference between Nickel Alloy 601 and Inconel 718 round bars

Nickel alloy 601 rods, due to their chromium and aluminum content, form a stable oxide layer, resulting in excellent high-temperature oxidation resistance, making them ideal for furnace components. In contrast, Inconel 718 round bars maintain exceptional strength (tensile and creep strength) and excellent corrosion resistance at extremely high temperatures (up to 1300°F and above), making them more suitable for jet engine, aerospace, and oil and gas components requiring extremely high mechanical performance. Unlike Inconel 718, alloy 601 rods are more focused on oxidation resistance and low-stress applications.

What are the differences between Inconel 617 and 601?

Inconel 601 has excellent oxidation resistance and strong resistance to chloride ion stress corrosion cracking and alkaline corrosion. In contrast, Inconel 617 exhibits superior metallurgical stability, strength, and oxidation resistance, performing particularly well in high-temperature environments.

Inconel 601 rod is a bar-shaped profile made from a nickel-chromium-iron-aluminum reinforced alloy (Inconel 601). Its core characteristic is its unparalleled resistance to oxidation, carburization, and high-temperature sulfur corrosion at extreme temperatures up to approximately 1250°C, while maintaining good high-temperature strength and machinability. It is primarily used in the manufacture and processing of critical components that require long-term exposure to severe oxidizing-reducing atmospheres and thermal cycling, such as high-temperature heat treatment furnace components, industrial combustion systems, petrochemical cracking units, and aerospace hot-end components. It is a high-performance raw material specifically designed for ultra-high temperature environments.

 

Inconel 718 rod is a bar-shaped profile made from a precipitation-hardened nickel-chromium-based high-temperature alloy (Inconel 718). Its core characteristic is precipitation hardening achieved through elements such as niobium and molybdenum, providing ultra-high strength and excellent creep and fatigue resistance at temperatures up to approximately 700°C. It is primarily used in the manufacture of critical structural components subjected to extreme stress and high temperatures, such as aircraft engine turbine shafts, high-strength fasteners, oil drilling tools, racing car transmission components, and high-performance molds. It is a top-tier raw material for aerospace, energy, and high-end manufacturing industries with stringent requirements for material mechanical properties and high-temperature stability.

High-Temperature Performance of Inconel 601 and Inconel 718 Alloy Rods
Inconel 601 Rods: Long-term operating temperature can reach 1100℃, with a short-term maximum temperature of 1250℃. It exhibits excellent oxidation resistance and creep resistance in high-temperature environments, primarily relying on the dense oxide film formed by chromium to resist high-temperature oxidation.

Inconel 718 Rods: The upper limit for long-term operating temperature is 650℃, with a short-term maximum temperature of 800℃. Above 650℃, its precipitation strengthening phase (γ'' phase) decomposes, leading to a significant decrease in mechanical properties. However, below 650℃, its high-temperature creep strength and fatigue strength are superior to Inconel 601.

 

Corrosion Resistance of Inconel 601 and Inconel 718 Rods
Inconel 601 Rods: The high chromium content gives it excellent oxidation resistance and resistance to gaseous corrosion. It can withstand oxidizing acids (such as nitric acid) and high-temperature sulfide environments, making it suitable for high-temperature corrosive conditions in the chemical industry; however, its corrosion resistance in reducing acids (such as hydrochloric acid and sulfuric acid) is weaker.

Inconel 718 Rods: Containing molybdenum and niobium elements, in addition to certain oxidation resistance, it has better corrosion resistance to reducing acids, seawater, and salt spray environments, and has good resistance to stress corrosion cracking, making it suitable for complex corrosive scenarios such as marine engineering and oil and gas extraction.

 

Comparison of Machinability
Inconel 601 Rods: Has good machinability and can be processed using conventional methods, such as hot rolling, cold rolling, forging, and welding. Arc welding and TIG welding can be used, and good performance can be maintained without complex post-welding treatment.

Inconel 718 Rods: Difficult to machine, it is a typical difficult-to-machine material. It has a very strong work hardening tendency. Hot cracking is prone to occur during welding, requiring strict control of welding process parameters. Solution treatment and aging treatment are required after welding to restore material properties. Forging must be carried out within a high-temperature range of 1000-1120℃ to ensure that the material undergoes sufficient plastic deformation.
