MONEL 400 (UNS N04400) Ni 66.5 Cu 31.5 Description
Overview
Monel 400 is a nickel-copper alloy resistant to high temperatures in seawater and steam as well as salt and caustic solutions.
Monel 400 is a nickel-copper alloy with excellent corrosion resistance in a variety of media. Monel 400 is characterized by good general corrosion resistance, good weldability and medium to high strength. This alloy has been used in a variety of applications. It has excellent resistance to fast flowing salt or sea water. When degassed, it is particularly resistant to hydrochloric and hydrofluoric acids. The alloy is slightly magnetic at room temperature. Monel 400 is widely used in the chemical, petroleum and marine industries.

feature
Corrosion resistant in a wide range of marine and chemical environments. From pure water to non-oxidizing inorganic acids, salts and bases.
This alloy is more resistant to corrosion under reducing conditions than copper and is more resistant to corrosion than copper under oxidizing conditions, but it does show better resistance to reducing media than under oxidizing conditions.
Good mechanical properties from sub-zero temperatures to about 480C.
Has good resistance to sulfuric acid and hydrofluoric acid. However, aeration can lead to increased corrosion rates. Can be used to treat hydrochloric acid, but the presence of oxidizing salts will greatly accelerate corrosion.
Resistant to neutral, alkaline and acidic salts, but less resistant to oxidizing acid salts such as ferric chloride.
Excellent resistance to chloride ion stress corrosion cracking.
Application areas
Feed water and steam generator piping.
Brine heaters and seawater scrubbers in tanker inert gas systems.
Sulfuric acid and hydrofluoric acid alkylation unit.
Pickling rod heating coil.
Heat exchangers for various industries.
Transfer pipeline from crude oil tower in refinery.
Uranium refining and isotope separation plants in nuclear fuel production.
Pumps and valves used in the manufacture of perchlorethylene, chlorinated plastics.
Monoethanolamine (MEA) reboiler tube.
Cladding of the upper area of the crude oil column in a refinery.
Propeller and pump shafts.
