Is Inconel 600 better than SS 304?
In high-temperature and highly corrosive environments, Inconel 600 outperforms SS 304; however, for general applications, SS 304 is more cost-effective and easier to process. Due to its higher nickel content, Inconel 600 exhibits excellent high-temperature and chemical corrosion resistance; while SS 304 is better suited for common low-temperature applications such as food processing and construction.

What are the disadvantages of 304 stainless steel?
One disadvantage of 304 stainless steel is its susceptibility to pitting corrosion, also known as localized corrosion, which is caused by exposure to high chloride solutions or salt environments. Pitting corrosion can occur even at chloride concentrations as low as 25 ppm.

Comparing Stainless Steel 304 and Inconel 600
Chemical Composition
Stainless Steel 304 Rod:
Nickel (Ni): 8-10.5%
Chromium (Cr): 18-20%
Iron (Fe): Balance
Carbon (C): 0.08% Max
Manganese (Mn): 2% Max
Silicon (Si): 1% Max
The composition of 304 stainless steel gives it excellent corrosion resistance, making it a popular choice in many applications.
Inconel 600 Rod:
Nickel (Ni): 72-78%
Chromium (Cr): 14-17%
Iron (Fe): Balance
Carbon (C): 0.15% Max
Manganese (Mn): 1% Max
Silicon (Si): 0.5% Max
Inconel 600 has a high nickel content, thus exhibiting excellent high-temperature resistance and resistance to harsh environments.
Mechanical Properties
304 Stainless Steel Bars:
Tensile Strength: Approx. 520 MPa
Yield Strength: Approx. 215 MPa
Elongation: Approx. 40%
Hardness: Typically 70 HRB
304 stainless steel has good mechanical properties and is suitable for general applications.
Inconel 600 Alloy Bars:
Tensile Strength: Approx. 690 MPa
Yield Strength: Approx. 275 MPa
Elongation: Approx. 40%
Hardness: Typically 90 HRB
Inconel 600 alloy offers superior strength and durability under high temperatures and extreme conditions.
Corrosion and Oxidation Resistance
Stainless Steel 304 Rod: Although it has good resistance to most oxidizing acids, it may perform poorly in very high temperatures or highly corrosive environments.
Inconel 600 Rod: Its excellent antioxidant and anti-carburization properties make it an ideal choice for high-temperature and corrosive chemical environments.
| Feature | Inconel 600 | SS 304 |
|---|---|---|
| Material Type | Nickel-chromium alloy | Austenitic stainless steel |
| High-Temperature Performance | Excellent strength and oxidation resistance at high temperatures; ideal for aerospace and gas turbines | Low strength at high temperatures; suitable for medium temperatures |
| Corrosion Resistance | Superior resistance to extreme corrosion, such as in aggressive chemicals and high-temperature oxidation | Good resistance to general corrosion, but can be vulnerable to high temperatures and chlorides |
| Mechanical Properties | Higher strength and creep resistance | Lower strength but higher ductility, making it easier to form and weld |
| Fabrication | More difficult to machine and weld | Easier to fabricate, weld, and form |
| Cost | More expensive | More cost-effective |
| Common Applications | Aerospace, gas turbines, nuclear industry, high-temperature chemical processing, marine engineering | Construction, medical equipment, food processing, household products, kitchen sinks, sanitary fittings |
