Characteristics and uses of Inconel 600 pipe
Inconel 600 pipe is a nickel-chromium-iron alloy (UNS N06600) that offers excellent high-temperature strength, oxidation resistance, and resistance to chloride-ion stress corrosion cracking and high-purity water corrosion. Its key properties include excellent mechanical properties, high ductility, good weldability, and formability, enabling its use in harsh, corrosive environments. Common applications include components for the nuclear and chemical industries, high-temperature furnace elements, heat-treating equipment, and aerospace applications where durability under extreme conditions is critical.
What are the specifications for Inconel 600 pipe?
Inconel 600 pipe is composed of 72% nickel, 14% chromium, and 6% iron, along with carbon, manganese, silicon, sulfur, and copper. This composition also makes the pipe stronger. The material has a minimum yield strength of 310 MPa and a minimum tensile strength of 655 MPa.

Inconel 600 Pipe Characteristics
Corrosion Resistance
Alloy 600 pipe offers excellent corrosion resistance, thanks to the dual corrosion resistance of chromium and nickel. Chromium protects against corrosion in oxidizing media, while nickel protects against attack by a wide range of reducing agents. Alloy 600 exhibits good corrosion resistance in reducing acids, weakly oxidizing acids, high-purity water, and other media. However, Alloy 600 pipe is not suitable for use in strong oxidizing acids, such as hot nitric acid. It is essentially unaffected by chloride stress corrosion cracking.
High Temperature Resistance
Inconel 600 pipe maintains excellent oxidation resistance up to 1177°C (2150°F). However, it is susceptible to sulfidation attack.
Inconel 600 Pipe Mechanical Properties
Alloy 600 pipe is available in low-strength, annealed condition, or strengthened by the sintering process. Even at high strength, Alloy 600 pipe maintains excellent toughness and maintains ductility at low temperatures.
Inconel 600 Tube Heat Treatment
Although Inconel alloy 600 tubing cannot be strengthened by heat treatment, it is typically annealed or stress relieved after hot or cold working. Stress relieving temperatures of 1400°F to 1600°F (760°C to 871°C) (927°C to 1038°C) fully restore the alloy's softening properties.
Workability
Alloy 600 tubing exhibits good hot and cold working properties in the annealed condition. Hot working should be performed above 1600°F (871°C) to ensure adequate ductility, while cold working should be performed below 1200°F (649°C).
