ASTM B409 Incoloy 800 Series Information

ASTM B409 Incoloy 800 Series Information
The ASTM B409 standard covers the Incoloy 800 series alloys (UNS N08800, N08810, N08811), which are nickel-iron-chromium alloys known for their high-temperature strength, corrosion resistance, oxidation resistance, and carburization resistance, making them crucial in applications such as furnace components, chemical processing, and heat exchangers. The 800H/HT grades, due to controlled aluminum/titanium content, exhibit superior creep resistance and better high-temperature performance compared to the standard 800 alloy.
What is the heat treatment process for Incoloy 800 alloy?
The chemical composition of INCOLOY 800HT alloy falls within the composition range of 800H alloy, but with certain restrictions, and requires heat treatment at a minimum temperature of 2100°F (1149°C). Its carbon content is 0.06% to 0.10% (compared to 0.05% to 0.10% for 800H alloy), and its aluminum + titanium content is 0.85% to 1.20% (compared to 0.30% to 1.20% for 800H alloy).

ASTM B409 Incoloy 800/800H/800HT Key Characteristics:
Composition: Nickel, chromium, and iron-based alloy; H/HT versions enhance high-temperature performance by controlling carbon, aluminum, and titanium content.
Performance: Excellent resistance to oxidation, carburization, sulfidation, and aqueous stress corrosion cracking, as well as good fracture/creep strength.
Grades:
Alloy 800 (N08800): General purpose, suitable for applications up to 1500°F (816°C).
Alloy 800H (N08810): Higher strength, with superior creep/fracture properties compared to Alloy 800.
Alloy 800HT (N08811): Further enhanced creep/fracture strength due to controlled aluminum and titanium content.
Applications: Furnace components, petrochemical equipment, heat exchangers, steam generator tubes, electric heating element sheaths.
Processing: Similar to iron alloys, it work hardens, but can be welded (SMAW, GTAW, GMAW, SAW) and formed using standard techniques.
Main Differences (800 vs. 800H/HT):
Alloy 800H/HT has a specific carbon content and controlled aluminum + titanium content, resulting in improved strength at extreme temperatures.
Summary: For general high-temperature applications, choose Incoloy 800; however, if higher strength and fracture resistance are required at higher temperatures (above 1500°F), especially in demanding furnace or process environments, then 800H or 800HT should be selected.
