1.4501 Super Duplex

1. ASTM Grade of 1.4501 Super Duplex

The material designation 1.4501 is a European EN (European Norm) grade for super duplex stainless steel. In the ASTM (American) standard system, it is equivalent to:

ASTM A790/A790M Grade UNS S32760 (also known as "F55" in some industry contexts).

Note: The UNS (Unified Numbering System) for 1.4501 is UNS S32760.

2. Mechanical Properties of 1.4501 Super Duplex (UNS S32760)

Property Minimum Requirements (ASTM A790)
Tensile Strength ≥ 750 MPa (109,000 psi)
Yield Strength (0.2% offset) ≥ 550 MPa (79,800 psi)
Elongation at Break ≥ 15%
Hardness (HB) ≤ 310
Impact Toughness (Charpy V-notch) ≥ 50 J (at -20°C / -4°F)

3. Chemical Composition of 1.4501 Super Duplex (UNS S32760)

Element Range
Carbon (C) ≤ 0.030
Chromium (Cr) 24.0–26.0
Nickel (Ni) 6.0–8.0
Molybdenum (Mo) 3.0–4.5
Nitrogen (N) 0.20–0.30
Manganese (Mn) ≤ 1.0
Phosphorus (P) ≤ 0.030
Sulfur (S) ≤ 0.010
Copper (Cu) 0.5–1.0
Tungsten (W) 0.5–1.0
Copper (Cu) and Tungsten (W): Enhance resistance to corrosion in acidic environments (e.g., sulfuric acid).

High Chromium (Cr), Molybdenum (Mo), and Nitrogen (N): Provide superior pitting/crevice corrosion resistance.

4. Applications of 1.4501 Super Duplex (UNS S32760)

Due to its extreme corrosion resistance and high strength, 1.4501 (S32760) is used in harsh environments where other materials fail. Key applications include:

Oil and Gas Industry

Subsea Systems: High-pressure pipelines, risers, and wellhead components in deep-sea oil/gas extraction (resists H₂S, CO₂, and chloride-rich fluids).

Refineries: Equipment for processing sour crude oil (resists sulfide stress corrosion).

Chemical and Petrochemical Processing

Reactors and Heat Exchangers: Handling aggressive chemicals (e.g., sulfuric acid, chlorides, and organic acids).

Offshore Chemical Storage: Tanks and vessels for transporting corrosive liquids.

 Marine and Desalination

Desalination Plants: Seawater intake systems, pumps, and valves (excellent resistance to seawater and chloride corrosion).

Marine Engineering: Propulsion systems, offshore platforms, and hull components in harsh marine environments.

Paper and Pulp Industry

Equipment exposed to bleaching agents (e.g., chlorine dioxide) and alkaline pulping processes.

 Pharmaceutical and Food Processing

High-purity systems requiring resistance to sanitizing agents (e.g., caustic soda, hydrogen peroxide).

 Energy Sector

Geothermal Plants: Components exposed to high-temperature, mineral-rich brines.

Wastewater Treatment: Systems handling aggressive wastewater (e.g., industrial effluents with high chloride/sulfide content).

Heavy Industrial Equipment

High-strength fasteners, valves, and fittings in corrosive environments where failure risks are critical (e.g., offshore rigs, chemical tankers).

5.Why Choose 1.4501?
Its "super duplex" classification (higher alloy content than standard duplex grades like 2205) makes it ideal for applications requiring the highest levels of corrosion resistance and mechanical strength, often in combination with extreme temperatures or pressures.
