Duplex 2205 is a nitrogen-enhanced duplex stainless steel designed to address common corrosion issues encountered with 300 series stainless steels. "Duplex" describes a range of stainless steels that are neither fully austenitic, nor 304 stainless, nor purely ferritic, such as 430 stainless. The structure of 2205 duplex stainless steel consists of austenite pools surrounded by a continuous ferrite phase. In the annealed state, 2205 contains approximately 40-50% ferrite. Often referred to as the work horse grade, 2205 is the most widely used grade in the duplex stainless steel family.

 

The advantage of the duplex structure is that it combines the good qualities of ferritic alloys (resistance to stress corrosion cracking and high strength) with the good qualities of austenitic alloys (ease of fabrication and corrosion resistance).

 

Use of 2205 duplex stainless steel should be limited to temperatures below 600°F. Prolonged high temperature exposure can make 2205 stainless steel brittle.

Duplex 25 Chrome is suitable for environments with high chloride content, typically used in oil and gas production, marine applications and chemical processing. In the upstream oil and gas sector, 22 Chrome is widely used as tubing, casing or lining in corrosive wells containing CO2, low H2S and chlorides. It is commonly used in heat exchangers that use chlorine-containing water as the coolant.

CORROSION RESISTANCE

Alloy 2205 has excellent resistance to chloride-induced pitting corrosion and stress corrosion cracking. It has a minimum Pitting Resistance Number (PREN) of 35. It is suitable for service in environments high in chlorides, such as oil and gas production and in heat exchangers using chloride-bearing water as a coolant. It is also suitable for mild hydrogen sulfide, dilute reducing and organic acids, and moderate to high levels of oxidizing acids.

 

ELEVATED TEMPERATURE RESISTANCE

The ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code places an upper-temperature limit of 600°F (315°C). Exposure to temperatures above this for extended periods results in embrittlement.

 

MECHANICAL PROPERTIES

Alloy 2205 has more than twice the strength of conventional austenitic stainless steels in the annealed condition. It can also be provided in the cold-worked condition with yield strength exceeding 160 ksi. It maintains good toughness at temperatures down to -50°F (-10°C).
