4130 Normalized Steel Tube Full Introduction
4130 Normalized Steel Tube is a premium chromium-molybdenum alloy designed for critical structural applications requiring balanced strength, ductility and cost-effectiveness. Through precisely controlled normalizing at 870°C followed by air cooling, this heat treatment achieves a refined grain structure and uniform phase distribution, resulting in a unique combination of mechanical properties:

Enhanced structural integrity: Yield strength (≥520 MPa) is 15% higher than the as-rolled state while maintaining more than 20% elongation, and 25% weight reduction compared to carbon steel alternatives without compromising safety factor.
Optimal machinability: With a controlled hardness of 197-229 HB, machining efficiency is increased by 40% compared to quenched and tempered steels, significantly reducing tool wear and production costs.
Excellent Weldability: Normalizing eliminates residual stresses and allows defect-free welds with AWS E7018 electrodes at preheat temperatures as low as 150°C (300°F), 50°C cooler than unnormalized material.
Fatigue Performance: Fatigue limit of 340 MPa (R=-1) under cyclic loading makes it ideal for vibrating machine parts subject to >10⁷ stress cycles.
For harsh environments, normalized 4130 steel resists oxidation at temperatures up to 650°F (343°C) and maintains a notch toughness of over 50 J at -40°C, outperforming conventional grades at cryogenic temperatures. 4130 steel has a lot of promise in applications where strength-to-weight ratio is critical: chassis roll cages with walls as thin as 1.2 mm (0.047 in) have passed FIA crash tests, hydraulic cylinders can withstand 6,000 psi operating pressures, and aerospace actuators can withstand 10g shock loads. Optimized through complementary cold working, tensile strength can reach 860 MPa while still maintaining 15% elongation-a property unmatched by aluminum or titanium alloys at the same price ($4.2/kg). For engineers seeking a balance between performance and manufacturability, standardized 4130 steel represents the precise balance between metallurgical science and practical engineering economics.

FAQ

1. What is AISI 4130?

AISI 4130 is a chromoly steel, also known as chrome moly steel. It's a medium-carbon, low-alloy steel popular for its balance of strength, toughness, and machinability.
2. Is chrome-molybdenum steel better than steel?
What distinguishes chrome-molybdenum steel from other types of steel is its higher tensile strength. This means it can withstand greater forces without breaking or deforming. It also has better corrosion resistance, making it ideal for applications exposed to harsh environments or moisture.
3. Will 4130 chrome-molybdenum steel rust?
Both 4140 and 4130 steels are low-alloy steels that have excellent strength, toughness, and corrosion resistance.
4. Is 4130 a carbon steel?
4130 carbon steel is a low-carbon steel with a carbon content of approximately 0.3%. 4130 is also an alloy steel with chromium and molybdenum as strengthening agents. This steel is easy to weld and can be heat treated more easily than other mild steels.
