All different grades of INCONEL contain high levels of nickel, with the flagship INCONEL alloy 625 containing at least 58% nickel in its composition. When combined with large amounts of chromium, these nickel alloys have better corrosion resistance and high temperature resistance than other competing alloys.

However, when choosing to use one of these nickel-based superalloys, it is important to understand how to handle them. This highly specialized and technical material requires processing and processing by engineers who understand the unique properties of the INCONEL range. Without the correct methods and processes, nickel-based products can be difficult to process.

First, you need to focus on processing speed. Using solid carbide end mills to machine this durable metal alloy at high speeds can shorten tool life and cause work hardening. This means you need to be prepared to resharpen your knives or replace your tools regularly. However, you can use these high-speed drill bits at a slower speed if this is the best option for your machine.

Another thing to consider when machining these high specification nickel alloys is the use of coolant. Machining these nickel superalloys generates large amounts of heat, which can cause the material to deform during machining. You may need to experiment with the correct combination and amount of coolant and lubricant depending on the project. For CNC machining, for example, some engineers have found that using water-soluble vegetable oil-based fluids can improve production efficiency.

When it comes to welding methods, the most commonly recommended is gas tungsten arc welding (GTAW, also known as tungsten inert gas welding or TIG). For best results, this is preferable to other welding processes such as gas metal arc welding (GMAW) or stick arc welding (SMAW).
