The tensile strength of Monel 400 alloy tube is in the range of 517-620 MPa and the yield strength is 172-345%, which makes it an ideal steel grade. It contains up to 40-50% nickel, 34% copper, 2.5% iron, up to 2% manganese, and less than 1% silicon and carbon elements. Monel 400 alloy is known as a super alloy and is available in different shape standards such as hexagonal, round, tube, pipe, strip, plate, and wire. The standards for Monel 400 are AMS 4574, AMS 4675, AMS 4731, ASTM B163, ASTM B165, ASTM F96, UNS N04400, etc.

The machinability of Monel 400 can be challenging as work hardening occurs during machining. While conventional machining works well on ferrous alloys used for this alloy. Welding methods for this grade include metal arc welding, submerged arc welding, and other methods. Controlled procedures allow for forging of Monel 400. Hot working can be done in the range of 648-1176 degrees Celsius. However, cold working is only used for soft die materials to obtain a complete surface finish. After forming, annealing of this grade should be done at 926 degrees Celsius.

Applications of Monel 400 alloy include marine equipment for seawater, pumps, valves and piping systems, chemical plant equipment, eyeglass frames, aerospace applications, musical instruments.
