What Is Monel Alloy Used For?

What is Monel alloy used for?

Monel is an alloy (that is, a combination of two or more elements, at least one of which is a metal, and the resulting material has metallic properties). It is based on nickel (65-70%) and copper (20-29%) and also contains iron and manganese (5%) among other compounds.

Monel was discovered in 1901 by Robert Crooks Stanley, who was working for the International Nickel Company (INCO). The new alloy is named after the company's president.

Monel is a trademark of Specialty Metals Corporation

Monel is available in different commercial types such as Alloy 400, Alloy 401, Alloy R-405, Alloy 450, Alloy K-500, Monel 404 Copper Nickel Alloy. Standard product shapes are round, hexagonal, flat, forgings, tubes, tubes, sheets, plates, strips and wires.

Monel alloy properties
Highly resistant to corrosion. Monel is known as a corrosion-resistant, rust-proof material. It is corrosion-resistant, acid-resistant, and some alloys are fire-resistant in pure oxygen.
Stronger than steel
plasticity
Low thermal expansion coefficient
Highly alkali resistant
Can be welded, soldered and soldered

application

Monel alloy is used in marine engineering, chemical and hydrocarbon processing equipment, valves, pumps, shafts, fittings, fasteners and heat exchangers. It is also used as part of metal instruments and spectacle frames.

In the 1950s, Monel began to be replaced by stainless steel, which could produce the same shapes at a lower cost (due to the use of less nickel).
