Monel 400 nickel-copper alloy cold-worked seamless pipe

Monel 400 nickel-copper alloy cold-worked seamless pipe
Monel 400 cold-worked seamless pipe is a high-strength, corrosion-resistant nickel-copper alloy (UNS N04400), renowned for its exceptional performance in seawater, hydrochloric acid, hydrofluoric acid, and other harsh environments. It is manufactured by cold working (drawing or rolling) the solid solution alloy to increase its strength and toughness. It is widely used in pumps, heat exchangers, and piping systems in industries such as marine, chemical, and oil and gas.
What are the specifications for Monel 400 pipe?
This grade of nickel-copper alloy is available in ASTM B165 and B725 specifications. Pipes include seamless, welded, electric-resistance-welded, and fabricated pipe. ASME SB165 Monel 400 seamless pipe conforms to ASTM, ASME, and API standards and is available in nominal inside diameters ranging from 15 inches to 150 inches.

Overview of MONEL400/UNS N04400 Cold-Worked Seamless Pipe
Monel 400 pipe is a nickel-copper alloy resistant to high-temperature seawater and steam, as well as saline and alkaline solutions. Monel 400 pipe is a nickel-copper alloy with excellent corrosion resistance in a wide range of media. It offers good corrosion resistance, excellent weldability, and medium to high strength. This alloy is widely used in a variety of applications. It exhibits excellent resistance to fast-flowing brackish or seawater, and is particularly resistant to degassed hydrochloric and hydrofluoric acids. The alloy is slightly magnetic at room temperature. Monel 400 pipe is widely used in the chemical, petroleum, and marine industries.
Properties of MONEL400/UNS N04400 Cold-Worked Seamless Pipe
It offers corrosion resistance in a wide range of marine and chemical environments, from pure water to non-oxidizing mineral acids, salts, and alkalis.
The alloy is more resistant to nickel under reducing conditions and better than copper under oxidizing conditions, but its resistance in reducing media is better than in oxidizing media. It exhibits good mechanical properties at temperatures ranging from sub-zero to approximately 480°C.
It exhibits good resistance to sulfuric and hydrofluoric acids. However, aeration can lead to accelerated corrosion rates. It can handle hydrochloric acid, but the presence of oxidizing salts greatly accelerates corrosion.
The alloy is resistant to neutral, alkaline, and acidic salts, but has poor resistance to oxidizing acidic salts (such as ferric chloride).
It exhibits excellent resistance to chloride ion stress corrosion cracking.

Production and Processing
Raw Materials: High-purity nickel, copper, iron, and manganese are melted to form a stable alloy.
Casting and Hot Working: The molten alloy is cast into billets and then hot-rolled into intermediate shapes.
Cold Working: The billets are then cold worked (drawn or rolled) to refine the grain structure and increase mechanical strength until the desired full hard state is reached.
Heat Treatment: Annealing or stress relieving can be performed to relieve stresses, restore ductility, and achieve the desired combination of strength and ductility.
Applications
Marine: Used in pumps, valves, marine equipment, propeller shafts, and seawater equipment.
Chemical Processing: Suitable for process vessels, piping, heat exchangers, and equipment handling acids such as hydrochloric and hydrofluoric acids.
Other Uses: Used in gasoline and fresh water tanks, crude oil stills, and components in the explosives industry.
