Is INCOLOY 825 Stainless Steel?

Is INCOLOY 825 stainless steel?

Alloy 825 is a nickel-based alloy, which means the largest element is nickel, making up 38-46% of the total. It also contains iron, chromium and molybdenum, but in lower amounts.

Stainless steel is a corrosion-resistant steel. The composition of steel products is based on iron, and stainless steel requires at least 11.5% chromium to resist general corrosion. Increasing chromium content will improve corrosion resistance, while adding elements such as nickel and molybdenum will further improve mechanical properties and corrosion resistance.

So, while both alloy 825 and stainless steel contain iron, chromium, and nickel, their proportions are completely different. Nickel is an expensive alloy additive; therefore Alloy 825 is more expensive than most stainless steel grades. However, the higher nickel content means it resists oxidation when exposed to higher temperatures and has excellent resistance to many acids. Compared to many other nickel-based alloys, such as Inconel and Monel grades, nickel is not available in high amounts or expensive.

GNEE Steel stocks 825 alloy round steel in diameters 5/8"-10" (15.87-254 mm), and also offers tubing and hollow rods. We also stock a range of high performance stainless steel grades such as Ferralium 255, S32750, S32760, S32205, Nit50 and Nit60. These products are available from stock in larger diameters up to 16 inches (406.4 mm), depending on the specific product, as well as plate, pipe, flanges and fittings.
