Inconel alloys are resistant to oxidative corrosion and are ideal for use in extreme environments under pressure and heat. When heated, the Inconel alloy forms a thick and stable passivated oxide layer that protects the surface from further erosion. Inconel alloys maintain strength over a wide temperature range and are attractive for high temperature applications where aluminum and steel succumb to creep due to heat-induced crystal vacancies. The high temperature strength of Inconel alloys is developed by solution strengthening or precipitation hardening, depending on the alloy.
