Monel 400 Alloy

Monel 400 (UNS N 04400/2.4360) is a solid solution alloy composed of Ni and Cu that can only be hardened by cold working. It has both the noble metal properties of Cu and the passivation properties of Ni. It has good toughness and is used in various applications. A nickel-copper alloy with good corrosion resistance in corrosive environments. This alloy is typically used in oxidizing, neutral to moderately reducing environments. Another application area of this material is the marine environment and other non-oxidizing chloride solutions. Therefore, it is widely used in seawater desalination devices, heat exchangers, surface materials of marine structures, etc. This alloy has a long history of application as a corrosion-resistant material. A high-copper-nickel alloy was developed in the early twentieth century. At present, the proportion of copper and nickel in this alloy has been basically fixed. Like other industrial pure nickel products, Monel 400 alloy has low strength under annealed conditions. Due to this, different annealing temperatures can be used to give the material different strengths.

Corrosion resistant in a wide range of marine and chemical environments. From pure water to non-oxidizing inorganic acids, salts and bases.

This alloy is more resistant to nickel under reducing conditions than copper, and more resistant to corrosion than copper under oxidizing conditions, but it does show better resistance to reducing media than under oxidizing conditions.

Good mechanical properties from sub-zero temperatures to about 480C.

Has good resistance to sulfuric acid and hydrofluoric acid. However, aeration can lead to increased corrosion rates. Can be used to treat hydrochloric acid, but the presence of oxidizing salts will greatly accelerate corrosion.

Resistant to neutral, alkaline and acidic salts, but less resistant to oxidizing acid salts such as ferric chloride.

Excellent resistance to chloride ion stress corrosion cracking.
