What kind of material is 800 Incoloy

What kind of material is Incoloy 800?

Is it a stainless steel or a nickel-based alloy?

Incoloy 800 is a nickel-iron-chromium austenitic heat-resistant superalloy, and it is strictly categorized as a nickel-based alloy rather than stainless steel.
The classification basis lies in the proportion of core alloying elements and its performance orientation. From the perspective of chemical composition, Incoloy 800 contains 30%–35% nickel, 19%–23% chromium, and iron as the balanced element, with trace additions of carbon, manganese, silicon, aluminum, titanium, etc. Nickel is the dominant alloying element that determines its core performance, which is the key criterion for defining nickel-based alloys. By contrast, stainless steel is fundamentally an iron-based alloy, with chromium content ≥10.5% as the core index to achieve rust resistance, and its nickel content is generally below 20% (even for high-nickel austenitic stainless steel, nickel is only a supplementary alloying element rather than the dominant one).

In terms of performance characteristics, the high nickel content of Incoloy 800 gives it outstanding high-temperature stability, resistance to intergranular corrosion, and oxidation resistance at elevated temperatures (it can operate stably in continuous high-temperature environments up to 1100°C). These properties are far superior to those of conventional stainless steel, which is mainly designed for corrosion resistance at room temperature or moderate temperatures rather than long-term service under extreme high-temperature conditions.
In industrial applications, this classification difference also guides its application scenarios: stainless steel is widely used in daily necessities, architectural decoration, and general chemical equipment; while Incoloy 800 is targeted at high-end fields such as petrochemical cracking furnaces, nuclear power steam generators, thermal power boiler superheaters, and aerospace engine components, where high-temperature and corrosion resistance are critical requirements.
