What is the typical Nb content range in 625 Inconel

What is the typical niobium (Nb) content range in Inconel 625, and what are its key roles?
1.Niobium content range (nominal, by weight):
Nb + Ta: 3.15–4.15%
2.Key roles of niobium in Inconel 625:
Solid-solution strengthening (primary effect):
Nb dissolves in the nickel-chromium matrix and provides significant solid-solution strengthening, contributing to high tensile strength, creep strength, and fatigue resistance at both ambient and elevated temperatures.
Carbide and intermetallic formation (stabilization & secondary strengthening):
Nb has a strong affinity for carbon and forms NbC (niobium carbides).
These carbides:help stabilize the microstructure by reducing the tendency for chromium carbides to precipitate at grain boundaries;
provide additional strengthening through dispersion hardening;improve wear resistance in some applications.
Nb can also contribute to the formation of minor intermetallic phases (e.g., Laves phase in some microstructural conditions), which may have secondary effects on ductility and toughness depending on volume fraction and morphology.
Improved resistance to sensitization and intergranular corrosion:
By tying up carbon as NbC, Nb reduces the amount of carbon available to form chromium-rich carbides (e.g., M₂₃C₆) at grain boundaries. This mitigates chromium depletion at grain boundaries, thereby improving resistance to intergranular corrosion and sensitization, especially in environments where such attack is a concern.

Enhanced high-temperature creep and stress-rupture performance:
The combination of solid-solution strengthening and carbide precipitation gives Inconel 625 excellent creep resistance and stress-rupture strength at temperatures up to approximately 650–700°C (depending on product form and service conditions).
Weldability benefits (stabilization):
As a strong carbide former, Nb helps stabilize the weld heat-affected zone (HAZ) and reduces the risk of intergranular corrosion in welded structures, supporting the alloy's excellent weldability in many applications.
