What is Hastelloy C22?
Hastelloy c22 is an austenitic alloy known for its ability to perform in harsh conditions where enhanced resistance to high temperatures and corrosion is required. It is often used when other heat resistant alloys, such as duplex stainless steel, fail to meet the mechanical requirements of the application.
At a molecular level, it is composed of nickel, molybdenum, tungsten, and chromium.
What is Hastelloy C22 used for?
As mentioned above, Hastelloy is classified as a heat resistant alloy. This allows you to utilize the precise screening/filtering capabilities of woven wire mesh at temperatures up to 1250°F (676°C).
Additionally, the chemical composition of Hastelloy prevents oxidation at these extreme temperatures. In turn, you will find that the surface of Hastelloy woven wire mesh rarely discolors.
Now, in terms of corrosion resistance, Hastelloy is used when pitting is a concern. This is particularly beneficial when the woven wire mesh is introduced to industrial grade acids and bases.


What is Hastelloy C276?
Hastelloy c276 is a specialized woven wire mesh alloy designed to provide versatile corrosion resistance superior to most comparable alloys. It is widely known for its formability, being able to be hot and cold formed with relative ease.
Chemically, Hastelloy is composed of manganese, carbon, nickel, iron, silicon, chromium and molybdenum.
What is Hastelloy C276 used for?
Hastelloy is a popular wire mesh alloy in chemically forward applications with temperatures reaching 1900°F (1037°C). In fact, it resists grain boundary precipitation even after welding.
This makes it ideal for chemical processing.
Hastelloy c276 has the rare property of resisting hypochlorite solutions, chlorine dioxide solutions and chloride gases. It also has the ability to function when exposed to ferric chloride and cupric chloride.
What is the difference between Hastelloy C22 and C276?
When comparing Hastelloy c22 and Hastelloy c276, the first thing to note is that c22 offers more desirable corrosion resistance, particularly pitting and crevice corrosion. This is primarily because Hastelloy c22 contains more chromium than Hastelloy c276.
Therefore, if oxidation is a concern, Hastelloy c22 is the more desirable choice. That being said, both alloys offer similar properties when it comes to reducing metal oxides.
But how do you make the right Hastelloy wire mesh for your process?
Well, one major advantage of Hastelloy c22 over Hastelloy c276 is its improved weldability. As mentioned above, this includes increased resistance to intergranular corrosion caused by the aftereffects of extreme welding heat.
Despite the excellent qualities of these alloys, your budget will be the biggest determining factor in which alloy you go with. Hastelloy c22 requires less material to produce and is therefore the cheaper of the two Hastelloy variants.
All this suggests that Hastelloy c22 is an enhanced version of Hastelloy c276.
