What exactly is Inconel 600? What are its uses?

Inconel 600 is a high-performance nickel-chromium alloy known for its exceptional heat resistance, corrosion resistance, and oxidation resistance, maintaining its strength over a wide temperature range from cryogenic temperatures to extremely high temperatures (over 2000°F). Due to its high strength, ease of fabrication, and immunity to chloride stress corrosion cracking, its primary applications include critical components in nuclear reactors (steam generators, fuel handling), chemical/petrochemical processing (acids, caustic soda), furnace components (furnace baskets, trays, muffles), and marine equipment.

How much does Inconel 600 cost per pound?

As of December 2025, the current price of Inconel 600 on the global market ranges from $24.80 to $36.40 per pound ($54.70 to $80.20 per kilogram), which represents significant fluctuations compared to previous years.

What is Inconel 600?
Inconel 600 is a nickel-chromium alloy that exhibits stable high-temperature oxidation resistance. In addition, it is resistant to corrosion, high-purity water, and chloride ion stress corrosion cracking. Therefore, this alloy is ideal for use in spark plug electrodes, chemical and food processing, and furnace components.

Inconel is a nickel alloy primarily composed of nickel, iron, and chromium. It is an ideal material because it is both heat-resistant and corrosion-resistant. The only drawback is its higher manufacturing cost. While it is one of the more expensive materials you can use, it is reliable and durable. However, due to the superior performance of this material, it is worth the cost. It is also less prone to failure or performance degradation.

The alloy's resistance to sulfides and other oxidizing environments is attributed to its chromium content. Due to its high chromium content, Inconel 600 wire is an excellent alternative to commercially pure nickel in oxidizing environments. Most alkaline and neutral salt solutions have little effect on it.

Properties of Inconel 600
1) The following properties make Inconel 600 a worthwhile investment.
2) Only selective oxidation occurs under reducing and alternating oxidizing conditions.
3) Highly resistant to carburizing gases, nitrogen, and ammonia-containing atmospheres.
4) High strength and resistance to scaling due to high-temperature resistance.
5) Excellent corrosion resistance to high-purity water.
6) Resistant to organic acids, including stearic acid, formic acid, and acetic acid.

Uses of Inconel 600
Oil and Gas Extraction
Due to its excellent thermal fatigue strength and oxidation resistance, Inconel 600 is frequently used for separating extracted fluids or for pipeline transportation.

Heat Treatment Applications
Inconel is known for its high-temperature resistance and maintains sufficient tensile strength at high temperatures to withstand moderate loads. Compared to other austenitic stainless steel alloys, baskets made from superalloys like Inconel 600 are less prone to deformation during demanding heat treatment processes and can better secure workpieces.

Rapid Temperature Changes
In some industrial processes, high and low-temperature operations may alternate rapidly. Since most Inconel 600 alloys maintain excellent oxidation resistance at both high and low temperatures, an Inconel 600 basket can be used for operations ranging from near-cryogenic temperatures to heat treatment temperatures.

Seawater Applications
Because Inconel has excellent corrosion resistance to sodium chloride (salt) at various temperatures, it is frequently used in marine applications. Therefore, Inconel 600 is an ideal material for parts cleaning baskets in processes using salt or in plants located near the sea.

Jet Engines
Inconel 600 is used in the manufacture of jet engines and turbines. While cooling techniques are employed to rapidly reduce temperatures, the tolerance limits of many metals are still easily exceeded. Despite the rapid temperature changes caused by combustion processes and cooling techniques in the aerospace industry, Inconel 600 maintains good oxidation resistance and tensile strength.
