1. Core Chemical Composition
INCONEL® 625: ~61% Ni, 21.5% Cr, 9% Mo, 3.6% Nb – very low iron.
INCOLOY® 825: ~42% Ni, 21% Cr, 3% Mo, 2% Cu – ~30% iron (a "nickel-iron-chromium" alloy).
2. Key Performance Traits
High-Temperature Performance
INCONEL®: Excels at extreme high temperatures (up to 1,200°C/2,192°F or higher). Its high nickel content and additions of Nb/Ti enable it to form a stable, heat-resistant oxide layer and maintain mechanical strength (e.g., creep resistance) under prolonged exposure to heat and stress. This makes it ideal for high-heat environments like jet engines or furnace components.
INCOLOY®: Offers good high-temperature resistance but is not designed for the same extremes as INCONEL®. Its lower nickel and higher iron content limit its creep strength and oxidation resistance at temperatures above ~800°C/1,472°F. It performs better in moderately high-temperature applications (e.g., heat exchangers in refineries) rather than extreme heat.
Corrosion Resistance
INCONEL®: Shines in oxidizing, high-temperature corrosive environments (e.g., combustion gases, high-temperature acids). For example, INCONEL® 600 resists oxidation in steam and high-temperature air, while INCONEL® 625 resists pitting in harsh chemical process streams.
INCOLOY®: Excels in reducing or moderately corrosive environments (e.g., sulfuric acid, phosphoric acid, seawater, or sour gas). Its higher iron and copper content enhances resistance to general corrosion and pitting in non-extreme, chemically aggressive settings. For instance, INCOLOY® 825 is widely used in oil/gas "sour service" (containing H₂S) and chemical processing of acids.
3. Typical Applications
INCONEL® Applications
Aerospace: Jet engine components (turbine blades, combustion chambers), rocket nozzles.
Energy: Nuclear reactor core components, fossil fuel power plant superheater tubes.
Industrial: High-temperature furnace liners, chemical process heaters (exposed to 1,000°C+).
INCOLOY® Applications
Oil/Gas: Downhole tubing and wellhead components for sour gas (H₂S) wells.
Chemical Processing: Tanks, pipes, and heat exchangers for sulfuric/phosphoric acid production.
Marine: Seawater-handling equipment (e.g., desalination plants, offshore platform piping) due to its seawater corrosion resistance.
Food Processing: Equipment for acidic food products (e.g., fruit juices) to avoid metal contamination.
4. Mechanical Properties
INCONEL®: Higher tensile strength and creep resistance at elevated temperatures (critical for withstanding stress in jet engines or reactors). Some grades (e.g., INCONEL® 718) can be precipitation-hardened for even greater strength.
INCOLOY®: Good room-temperature and moderate-temperature strength, but lower creep resistance than INCONEL®. Most grades are solid-solution strengthened (relying on alloying elements rather than heat treatment) for simplicity in manufacturing.
