How much more difficult is Inconel 601 to machine compared to 316L?
Inconel 601 is significantly more difficult to machine than 316L stainless steel. While it is not possible to quantify the difference with a single numerical value, the relative difficulty can be described as follows:
1.Work hardening rate
– Inconel 601 has a very high work hardening rate, much higher than 316L.– Even light cutting forces can cause the material ahead of the tool to harden rapidly, leading to increased cutting resistance, tool wear, and potential tool failure.
– 316L also work hardens, but at a much lower rate, making it far more forgiving.
2.Cutting forces and power requirements
– Machining Inconel 601 typically requires 20–50% higher cutting forces compared to 316L, depending on the operation.
– Higher power consumption is needed to maintain material removal rates.
3.Tool wear and tool life
– Inconel 601's high temperature strength and abrasive carbide particles cause rapid tool wear.– Tool life can be 5–20 times shorter than when machining 316L, especially in turning and milling operations.
– Polycrystalline cubic boron nitride (PCBN) or ceramic tools are often required for efficient machining, whereas 316L can be easily machined with high-speed steel (HSS) or carbide tools.
4.Chip control
– Inconel 601 produces tough, stringy chips that are difficult to break, increasing the risk of chip entanglement and tool damage.
– 316L also produces continuous chips, but they are less tough and easier to control with proper tool geometry.

5.Heat generation and thermal conductivity
– Inconel 601 has low thermal conductivity, meaning heat generated during cutting stays concentrated near the cutting edge.– This accelerates tool wear and can cause thermal softening of the tool material.
– 316L has higher thermal conductivity, allowing heat to dissipate more effectively.
In summary, Inconel 601 is considered a difficult-to-machine (DTM) material, whereas 316L is a standard, relatively easy-to-machine stainless steel. The machining difficulty of Inconel 601 is typically rated 2–4 times higher than 316L in practical manufacturing experience.
