Learn about ASTM B167 Nickel Alloy 600 Bright Annealed Tube

ASTM B167 Nickel Alloy 600 bright annealed tubing is a corrosion- and heat-resistant seamless tubing made from a nickel-chromium-iron alloy (UNS N06600), also known as Inconel 600. This special temper imparts excellent machinability and ductility, making it suitable for cryogenic to high-temperature applications up to 2000°F (1093°C) in industries such as chemical processing, nuclear power, and heat treating. The bright annealing process produces a clean, bright, smooth surface while eliminating work hardening and imparting the desired mechanical properties and formability.

What is Nickel Alloy 600?

Nickel Alloy 600 is a nickel-chromium-iron solid solution-strengthened alloy suitable for applications requiring corrosion resistance and high-temperature performance. Nickel Alloy 600 has a service temperature range from cryogenic to 1200°C. The alloy also exhibits good machinability, weldability, and high strength.

Inconel 600 Tubing in the "Bright Annealed" Condition
Surface Treatment:
A "bright" finish refers to a bright, clean, scale-free finish on both the inside and outside surfaces achieved through an annealing process in a controlled atmosphere.
Mechanical Properties:
While this alloy can be hardened by cold working, annealing softens it, resulting in the highest ductility but lowest strength.

Common Applications for ASTM B167 Alloy 600 Bright Annealed Tubing
Chemical and Food Processing: Used in vessels and equipment handling various chemicals, as well as in food processing applications.
Aerospace and Nuclear: Used in the aerospace and nuclear industries, where high temperatures and corrosion are primary concerns.
Heat Treatment: Due to its oxidation and creep resistance, it is suitable for furnace muffles and other high-temperature furnace environments.
Oil and Gas: Used in crude oil stills and other components in the petrochemical industry.

Why Choose ASTM B167 Alloy 600 Bright Annealed Tubing?
Its combination of high-temperature strength, corrosion resistance, and excellent formability makes it an ideal choice for harsh environments and challenging applications. The bright annealed condition is ideal when high ductility is required during manufacturing or when an excellent surface finish is desired.
