Is Monel 400 better than stainless steel?
When manufacturing end-use applications that will be used in extreme environments, such as those that need to withstand extreme temperatures, high pressures, or extremely corrosive environments, it is critical to select an alloy that is up to the task. Monel 400 is a nickel-copper alloy that generally has good corrosion resistance, good weldability, and moderate to high strength. It is resistant to sea water and high temperature steam as well as caustic solutions and salts.
It is ideally suited for applications in refineries around the world and is also widely used in the chemical and marine industries. In the past, the oil and gas industry relied on what were generally considered low-end corrosion-resistant alloys. Over the past decade or so, the industry has adopted more advanced materials to reduce the failure of equipment and parts over time. Overcoming the impact of downtime due to corrosion, pressure and extreme temperatures, as well as the cost implications of failure rates and safety, has led the industry to look for materials like Monel 400 that offer greater reliability in harsh conditions.


Monel's good corrosion resistance and high strength properties also make it an excellent choice for marine engineering, pipes, cables, chemical processing, and a variety of other applications, depending on its form of use. As a corrosion-resistant alloy, Monel 400 is able to withstand high-temperature steam environments and fast-moving salt/seawater, while maintaining excellent resistance to stress corrosion cracking in most freshwaters. It can be used at temperatures up to 1000°F (538°C), making it an ideal alloy choice for very unique needs and applications due to its corrosion resistance and toughness.
What is Monel 400 made of?
A nickel-copper alloy, Monel 400 is a binary alloy, also known as the "Puritan alloy." This means the ratio of nickel to copper is the same as that found in natural ore mined from the Sudbury mine in Ontario, Canada. This alloy was created by the International Nickel Company in 1901 and named after its company president, Ambrose Monell, but since the trademark did not allow for last names, they changed the name by simply removing the "L" creates its own loophole. Now trademarked by Specialty Metals, Monel 400 is primarily composed of 52-67% nickel (Ni) and copper (Cu), with smaller amounts of iron, manganese, carbon and silicon. It is extremely difficult to machine compared to steel because it work-hardens quickly.

This alloy is available in a variety of forms and product lines, such as bar and bar (sometimes called 400 bar), but Ulbricht primarily supplies the alloy in strip and wire. Due to its high strength, this Monel alloy can be used in lighter gauges and thicknesses in some applications compared to other nickel alloys or stainless steels. It can produce a variety of strip surface finishes and conditions; Monel 400 also offers a variety of wire shapes, including flat and round Monel wire.
