Chemical composition
Inconel: The main components include nickel, chromium, and iron, and may also contain elements such as molybdenum and niobium. For example, the chemical composition of Inconel 625 is 62%Ni, 23%Cr, and 9%Mo.
Stainless steel: The main component is iron, usually contains more than 12.5% chromium, and may also contain elements such as nickel, molybdenum, and titanium. For example, the chemical composition of 304 stainless steel is 18%Cr and 8%Ni.
Corrosion resistance
Inconel: It has excellent corrosion resistance, especially for chloride-contaminated media such as seawater, geothermal water, neutral salts, and brine. It performs well in high temperature and corrosive environments.
Stainless steel: It is mainly suitable for oxidizing environments, but is not suitable for environments with high chloride ions (such as fluorine-containing environments) and is prone to pitting.
Mechanical properties
Inconel: It has high strength and good fatigue performance at high temperatures and is suitable for high temperature environments. It has high thermal strength and plasticity below 700℃, and is suitable for making anti-oxidation parts that bear low loads below 1100℃.
Stainless steel: It has high strength and toughness at room temperature, but its strength decreases at high temperature, and it is not suitable for high temperature environment.
Application field
Inconel: It is widely used in aviation engine parts, jet engines, chemical equipment, marine structures and other environments that require high temperature and corrosion resistance.
Stainless steel: It is widely used in construction, automobiles, food processing and other fields because of its good corrosion resistance and relatively low cost.
In summary, Inconel is more suitable for high temperature and highly corrosive environments due to its excellent high temperature corrosion resistance and mechanical properties; while stainless steel is suitable for room temperature and general corrosive environments due to its good room temperature mechanical properties and relatively low cost.
