Inconel 625 vs 718 Pipes: A Comprehensive Comparison

In environments such as seawater and chemical processing, Inconel 625 offers excellent corrosion resistance, making it an ideal choice; while Inconel 718, due to its high-temperature strength, fatigue resistance, and yield strength, is widely used in aerospace and racing engine fields. When selecting piping materials, engineers should choose based on the specific application's requirements for strength, temperature resistance, and corrosion resistance.

What grade is Inconel 625 pipe?

Typically, this cold-worked Inconel 625 seamless pipe is supplied in two conditions: Grade 1 and Grade 2. ASTM B444 UNS N06625 Grade 1 pipe is supplied in the annealed condition, while Grade 2 pipe is supplied in the solution-annealed condition.

Differences in Formability between Inconel 625 and Inconel 718 Tubing:

Both Inconel alloys exhibit extremely high formability due to their high nickel content. Both Inconel 625 and 718 can be cold-formed and stamped. While both materials possess excellent tensile strength, Inconel 718 tubing is particularly well-suited for forming, maintaining high strength even in the annealed state thanks to its resistance to post-weld or strain-aging cracking during heat treatment.

Due to the excellent formability of Inconel alloys, these materials can be rolled into wire rods of various specifications using wire mills for applications in industries such as aerospace and oil and gas. Furthermore, they can be used to manufacture bellows, springs, sealing rings, and honeycomb structures. They are also used as high-performance fastener alloys for harsh environments such as corrosive conditions.

Common Applications of Inconel 625 and 718 Tubing:

Inconel 718 and 625 can be used in a variety of production applications. In addition to round, flat, and square wires, the product forms also include strips, flat strips, and bends. It's worth noting that neither of these alloys is commonly used for deep drawing.

These two high-temperature alloys can be used to manufacture many stamped parts, such as diaphragms for sensor measuring devices. They are particularly suitable for applications requiring high temperature and high pressure resistance. Due to the extremely high strength and excellent oxidation resistance of Inconel 625 tubing under high temperature and corrosive conditions, it is often used in specific applications to manufacture flexible metal hoses, heat exchangers, manifolds, and marine components.
