Inconel 600 Alloy Hardness

The hardness of Inconel 600 varies significantly depending on its condition (annealed, cold-worked, etc.), but typically falls between Rockwell hardness B (HRB) 65 and 95. The annealed state has a lower hardness (approximately 88 HRB), while Inconel 600 alloy wires that have undergone heavy cold working or spring tempering have much higher hardness and can achieve very high tensile strength. However, hardness values are not commonly used for alloy wires; tensile strength is more important. Inconel 600 is a high-strength, high-temperature resistant alloy, and its strengthening primarily relies on cold working rather than precipitation hardening.

What are the uses of Inconel 600?

It is used in the manufacture of tempering furnaces, muffle furnaces, roller hearth furnaces, and other furnace components, as well as heat treatment baskets and trays. In the aerospace industry, Inconel 600 alloy is used to manufacture various engine and fuselage components that must withstand high temperatures, such as wiring harnesses, exhaust bushings, and turbine seals.

Hardness ranges by state and form:

Annealed state (plate/bar/tube): Hardness approximately 80-95 HRB, some sources indicate a typical value of 88 HRB.

Hot-rolled state (bar/plate/tube): Hardness typically ranges from 75-95 HRB, depending on the processing method.

Cold-drawn state (bar/strip): Hardness typically ranges from 65-85 HRB.

Spring steel: Extremely high strength; Rockwell hardness is usually not specified, but tensile strength can exceed 200 ksi (1380 MPa).

In summary:

Cold working is crucial: Inconel 600's hardness and strength are primarily achieved through cold deformation, rather than heat treatment as is common in some other alloys.

Shape matters: Hardness values differ for plates, bars, and wires.

High-temperature strength: While other alloys experience strength reduction at high temperatures, Inconel 600 retains excellent mechanical properties, including strength and hardness.
