How to distinguish between Inconel 601 and Monel 400 round bars?

The main difference between Inconel 601 rods and Monel 400 round bars lies in their core composition (nickel-chromium alloy versus nickel-copper alloy), which results in different properties: Inconel 601 alloy rods, due to the presence of chromium and aluminum, exhibit excellent oxidation resistance at extremely high temperatures, while Monel 400 rods, due to their copper content, perform exceptionally well in terms of corrosion resistance in marine and acidic environments. From a physical properties perspective, Monel 400 rods are denser and heavier, while Inconel 601 rods are harder but also more difficult to machine. Nevertheless, both alloys demonstrate excellent corrosion resistance in different environments.

What is Inconel 601 material?

Inconel 601 nickel-chromium-iron alloy (UNS N06601/W.Nr. 2.4851) is a general-purpose engineering material suitable for applications requiring heat and corrosion resistance. A notable characteristic of INCONEL 601 alloy is its excellent resistance to high-temperature oxidation.

Inconel 601 Round Bar
Inconel 601 round bar is a nickel-chromium alloy bar with added aluminum, offering excellent oxidation resistance and other forms of high-temperature corrosion resistance. Inconel 601 alloy bars have high tensile strength at room temperature and retain much of their strength at elevated temperatures. These properties make Inconel 601 round bars ideal for applications such as oil and gas extraction. Oil drilling often involves harsh conditions, requiring products that can withstand these conditions. In this context, Inconel 601 round bars are an ideal metal material.

Monel 400 Round Bar
Monel 400 round bar is a nickel-copper alloy with high strength and excellent corrosion resistance in a variety of media, including seawater, hydrofluoric acid, sulfuric acid, and alkalis. These properties make Monel 400 bars ideal for applications such as crude oil distillers, chemical processing equipment, and gasoline and freshwater storage tanks. Due to its corrosion resistance in seawater environments, Monel 400 is frequently used in marine applications.

Chemical composition of Inconel 601 rods and Monel 400 rods

Element Inconel 601 Rod (UNS N06601) Monel 400 Rod (UNS N04400)
Nickel (Ni) 58.0 – 63.0 % ≥ 63.0 %
Chromium (Cr) 21.0 – 25.0 %
Copper (Cu) ≤ 1.0 % 28.0 – 34.0 %
Iron (Fe) Balance ≤ 2.5 %
Aluminum (Al) 1.0 – 1.7 %
Manganese (Mn) ≤ 1.0 % ≤ 2.0 %
Silicon (Si) ≤ 0.5 % ≤ 0.5 %
Carbon (C) ≤ 0.10 % ≤ 0.3 %
Sulfur (S) ≤ 0.015 % ≤ 0.024 %
Titanium (Ti) ≤ 0.15 %

Performance Characteristics:
Inconel 601: Excellent high-temperature oxidation resistance (up to 2200°F), good creep strength, ideal for heat treatment/furnace components.
Monel 400: Excellent corrosion resistance to seawater, hydrofluoric acid, and alkalis; ideal for marine equipment and chemical processing.

Physical Properties:
Density: Monel 400 (approximately 8.8 g/cm³) is denser/heavier than Inconel 601 (approximately 8.2 g/cm³).
Hardness and Machinability: Inconel 601 is generally harder and therefore more difficult to machine; Monel 400 has better ductility and machinability.

Applications:
Inconel 601: Gas turbines, furnace components, heat exchangers, steam superheater supports.
Monel 400: Marine propellers, pump shafts, oil and gas industry, freshwater/seawater storage tanks.
