How machinable is Monel K500?

How machinable is Monel K500?

Machinability of Monel K500 Material
Monel K500 is a nickel-based heat-resistant super alloy (HRSA) material with a machinability rating of 35% and a hardness of 88 HRB.

Monel K500 contains 66% nickel and other alloying elements as shown in the table below.

The main characteristics of nickel-based alloys are their excellent strength and good corrosion resistance over a wide temperature range. Within this subgroup, the material standard also defines the permissible hardness range, which is an important factor affecting machinability (in addition to chemical composition).

Monel K500 is the lowest hardness of the nickel-based alloys, so the machinability is relatively high at 35%

Superalloys should be machined with a positive sharp cutting edge. Geometries suitable for austenitic stainless steels are also suitable for HRSA. However, quality manufacturers will offer additional geometries in their catalogues that are specifically designed for these challenging materials.
