Comprehensive Guide to Nickel-Based Superalloys: Inconel 600 (UNS N06600)

What is Inconel 600?

Nickel-Based Alloys: Inconel 600 (UNS N06600) is an early developed nickel-chromium-iron based solid solution strengthened alloy with good high temperature corrosion resistance and oxidation resistance, excellent hot and cold processing performance and good welding process performance, good hot strength and high plasticity below 700°C. The alloy can be strengthened by cold working, and can also be connected by resistance welding, fusion welding or brazing. It can be supplied in cold-rolled thin plates, hot-rolled thick plates, strips, wires, bars, round cakes, ring billets, ring forgings, etc. It is suitable for the production of oxidation-resistant parts that withstand low loads below 1100°C.

Designated as UNS N06600 or W.Nr. 2.4816, Inconel 600, also known as Alloy 600, is a nickel-chromium-iron alloy that has good oxidation resistance at high temperatures and is resistant to chloride ion stress corrosion cracking, high purity water corrosion, and alkali corrosion. It is mainly used in furnace components, chemical and food processing, nuclear engineering, and spark electrodes. Inconel 600 (76Ni-15Cr-8Fe) is a base alloy in the Ni-Cr-Fe system, in which the high nickel content enables it to resist reducing environments.

Material grade: Inconel 600 (N06600) nickel-based alloy.
Inconel 600 similar grades: GH600, GH3600 (China).

Processing performance and requirements of Inconel 600 (UNS N06600):
Formability of inconel600:
The alloy has good hot working performance, the heating temperature of ingot forging is 1110~1140℃; the final forging temperature is not less than 950℃, the slab rolling heating temperature is 1130~1170℃, and the finishing rolling heating temperature is 1090~1130℃. The solid solution treatment temperature of the finished product is 1010~1050℃.

Welding performance of inconel600:
The alloy has good welding performance and can be connected by arc welding, argon arc welding, resistance welding, brazing and other methods. Large or complex welded structural parts should be annealed at 870℃ for 1h after fusion welding to eliminate welding stress.

Characteristics of Inconel 600 (UNS N06600)
Nickel-chromium-iron alloy, solid solution strengthening.
Good high temperature corrosion resistance and oxidation resistance.
Excellent hot and cold working properties and welding properties.
Satisfactory hot strength and high plasticity up to 700℃.
Can be strengthened by cold working, or connected by resistance welding, fusion welding or soldering.
Corrosion resistance Inconel 600 (UNS N06600):
Resistant to corrosion by various corrosive media.
Chromium compounds make the alloy more corrosion resistant than nickel 99.2 (200) alloy and nickel (alloy 201, low carbon) under oxidizing conditions.
At the same time, high-content nickel alloys show good corrosion resistance in alkaline solutions and reducing conditions, and can effectively prevent ferric chloride stress corrosion cracking.
It has good corrosion resistance in organic acids such as acetic acid, acetic acid, formic acid, stearic acid, and also in inorganic acid media.
High-purity water used in primary and secondary cycles of nuclear reactors has excellent corrosion resistance.
Particularly outstanding performance is the ability to resist dry chlorine and hydrogen chloride corrosion, and the operating temperature can reach 650℃. At high temperature, the alloy in the annealed solution state in air has good oxidation resistance and high peel strength.
The alloy also exhibits resistance to ammonia and nitriding and carburizing atmospheres, but the alloy will be affected by partial oxidizing corrosive media when the redox conditions change alternately.
