Comparison of Inconel 718 round bars with stainless steel bars and titanium bars

Inconel 718, stainless steel, and titanium bars each have their own characteristics and are suitable for different applications. Inconel 718 performs exceptionally well in extreme high-temperature and corrosive environments, while titanium bars offer a very high strength-to-weight ratio, making them ideal for weight-sensitive designs. For general industrial applications with moderate temperature and corrosion requirements, stainless steel is a more cost-effective option.

Is Inconel 718 stronger than titanium alloys?

Inconel 718 has a tensile strength of 1,375 MPa, while Ti-6Al-4V titanium alloy (the strongest type) has a tensile strength of approximately 1,170 MPa. While this is lower than the strongest Inconel alloy, a broader range of properties may need to be considered when selecting materials.

What is Inconel 718?

Inconel 718 is a precipitation-hardening nickel-chromium alloy renowned for its superior mechanical properties and resistance to extreme environments. Inconel round bars are specifically developed to withstand high-temperature and corrosive environments and are widely used in the aerospace, power generation, and marine industries. The alloy's unique composition includes significant amounts of nickel, chromium, molybdenum, and niobium, which endow it with high strength and oxidation resistance.

Advantages of Inconel 718 round bars:

Excellent oxidation and corrosion resistance

High tensile strength, yield strength, and creep rupture strength

Excellent performance at high temperatures (up to 704°C or 1300°F)

Good weldability and machinability

Strong resistance to fatigue and stress corrosion cracking

Comparison with Stainless Steel Bars

Composition and Strength

Stainless steel is an iron alloy containing chromium and small amounts of nickel, molybdenum, and other elements. Inconel 718 round bars are a nickel-based alloy, while stainless steel's corrosion resistance comes from its chromium content. Therefore, Inconel 718 round bars are stronger and have better heat resistance than stainless steel.

Corrosion Resistance

Both materials have good corrosion resistance, but Inconel 718 performs better in extreme environments, such as acidic and high-temperature environments. Stainless steel corrodes in high-salt or oxidizing environments, while Inconel 718 remains stable.

Temperature Resistance

Stainless steel loses strength at high temperatures (above 1000°F or 538°C), while Inconel 718 round bars retain their shape at temperatures exceeding 1300°F (704°C). This makes Inconel round bars more suitable for aerospace and high-temperature applications.

Comparison with Titanium Bars

Composition and Strength

Titanium is a low-density metal known for its extremely high strength-to-weight ratio. While titanium bars are durable, Inconel 718 round bars offer greater mechanical strength and hardness, especially in high-temperature applications.

Corrosion Resistance

Titanium bars exhibit excellent corrosion resistance, particularly in seawater and chlorine-rich environments. However, Inconel 718 performs better under extreme high-temperature and oxidizing conditions.

Temperature Resistance

Titanium bars can withstand high temperatures, but their strength is not as high as that of Inconel round bars at extreme temperatures. Inconel 718 maintains its mechanical properties and structural integrity at even higher temperatures, making it ideal for aerospace and power generation applications.
