Comparison of Inconel 600 and Inconel 625 sheet metals for high-temperature components

Due to its higher strength and stronger corrosion resistance, Inconel 625 outperforms Inconel 600 in most high-temperature components, especially in harsh environments such as seawater and acidic solutions. However, for applications requiring a balance between high-temperature stability, good oxidation and carburization resistance, and a low risk of chloride corrosion, Inconel 600 is a suitable choice.

Is Inconel 600 magnetic?

Inconel 600 is non-magnetic, possesses excellent mechanical properties, combining high strength with good machinability and ease of welding. The 600 alloy exhibits cold-forming characteristics generally similar to chromium-nickel stainless steel.

When selecting materials for high-temperature applications, Inconel 600 and Inconel 625 alloy plates are two commonly used nickel-based superalloys with excellent performance. Both offer outstanding heat and corrosion resistance, but their respective properties make them more suitable for specific applications. Inconel 600 alloy plates perform exceptionally well in oxidizing environments up to 1093°C (2000°F) and have good machinability; while Inconel 625 alloy plates offer higher strength and corrosion resistance in reducing atmospheres up to 982°C (1800°F).

Composition and Properties of Inconel 600 and 625

Chemical Composition

Inconel 600 alloy plates are primarily composed of nickel (at least 72%) and chromium (14-17%), with trace amounts of iron, carbon, and other elements. This composition forms a protective oxide layer on its surface, giving it excellent oxidation resistance and high-temperature corrosion resistance. Inconel 625 alloy contains a higher chromium content (20-23%) and molybdenum (8-10%), as well as niobium and iron. The addition of molybdenum and niobium enhances the alloy's strength and provides excellent resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion, especially in reducing and corrosive chemical environments, making it suitable for demanding industrial applications.

Mechanical Properties

Inconel 600 sheets exhibit good strength and ductility over a wide temperature range, maintaining their mechanical properties even in oxidizing environments up to 1093°C (2000°F). At room temperature, its tensile strength is approximately 655 MPa (95 ksi), and its yield strength is approximately 310 MPa (45 ksi). In comparison, Inconel 625 offers superior mechanical properties, with a tensile strength of approximately 827 MPa (120 ksi) and a yield strength of approximately 414 MPa (60 ksi) at room temperature. It retains higher strength at higher temperatures, making it suitable for applications involving extreme temperatures and mechanical stress.

Corrosion Resistance

Both Inconel 600 and 625 exhibit excellent corrosion resistance, but their suitable environments differ. Inconel 600 sheets perform particularly well in oxidizing atmospheres, resisting oxidation, carburization, and other high-temperature corrosion. Inconel 625 alloy, due to its high chromium, molybdenum, and niobium content, exhibits excellent resistance to pitting corrosion, crevice corrosion, and stress corrosion cracking, especially in chlorine-containing or reducing environments. These properties ensure its long-term durability, reliability, and safety in chemical processing, marine, aerospace, and other industrial applications with extremely high corrosion resistance requirements.

Applications and Performance Comparison

High-Temperature Applications

Inconel 600 alloy is widely used in heat treatment equipment, furnace components, and internal components of nuclear reactors due to its excellent oxidation resistance and high-temperature stability. Its properties remain stable at temperatures up to 1093°C (2000°F), making it ideal for components exposed to extreme high-temperature environments in air.

Inconel 625 alloy is widely used in the aerospace, marine, and chemical industries, where high strength and corrosion resistance at high temperatures are required. It performs well in exhaust systems, heat exchangers, and offshore oil and gas equipment.

Machining and Weldability

Inconel 600 alloy sheet has excellent machinability, allowing for easy forming, machining, and welding using conventional processes. This makes it the material of choice for complex-shaped components and large structures requiring extensive machining.

While Inconel 625 alloy can also be machined using standard methods, its higher strength and work hardening rate may require more specialized machining techniques. However, it possesses excellent weldability and is often used as filler metal for dissimilar metal weld joints.
