Comparison of Inconel 600 and 690 alloys

Comparison of Inconel 600 and 690 alloys
Inconel 600 has a higher nickel content (approximately 75.5%), resulting in better high-temperature resistance; while Inconel 690 has a higher chromium content (approximately 27.7%), resulting in superior corrosion resistance. This difference makes alloy 690 more suitable for corrosive environments, such as pressurized water reactors; while alloy 600 is more commonly used in applications requiring strength to be maintained at high temperatures. Furthermore, alloy 690 also exhibits higher hardness and tensile strength, and better resistance to stress corrosion cracking (SCC) in many environments.
What is the difference between Inconel 690 and 625?
Inconel 625 (nickel alloy 625) has extremely high tensile strength due to its hardened microstructure. It is widely used in propulsion motors and marine components. Inconel 690 (nickel alloy 690) contains a high chromium content, which improves its resistance to saltwater corrosion, and it is commonly used in marine applications.

Inconel 600
Composition: It contains at least 72% nickel, 14-17% chromium and 6-10% iron.
Characteristics: It exhibits good resistance to high-temperature oxidation and various corrosive aqueous media. However, it is prone to work hardening, which increases the difficulty of processing.
Applications: It is widely used in various high-temperature applications, such as chemical and petrochemical processing.
Drawbacks: In certain high-temperature aqueous environments, its resistance to stress corrosion cracking (SCC) is poor, leading to its replacement by Inconel 690 in some applications.
Inconel 690
Composition: Has a higher chromium content than Inconel 600, which provides superior corrosion resistance.
Characteristics: Compared to the 600 series steels, this series exhibits superior resistance to stress corrosion cracking (SCC), especially in high-temperature water and strong alkaline solutions. Furthermore, its tensile strength is also higher than that of the 600 series steels.
Applications: It is primarily used as a replacement for Inconel 600 in applications requiring high corrosion resistance and resistance to stress corrosion cracking, especially in nuclear steam generator piping.
Advantages: Components made of Alloy 690 have improved corrosion resistance, which reduces the need for maintenance.
| Feature | Inconel 600 | Inconel 690 |
|---|---|---|
| Corrosion Resistance | Good resistance to high-temperature oxidation, but poor resistance to SCC | Excellent resistance to SCC and general corrosion in high-temperature aqueous environments |
| Primary Application | General high-temperature applications | Nuclear steam generator tubing and other components requiring high corrosion resistance |
| Chromium Content | 14-17% | Higher than 600 |
| Tensile Strength | Lower than 690 | Higher than 600 |
