Due to its high strength and fatigue resistance, 2024 is widely used in aircraft, especially wing and fuselage structures under tension. Additionally, because the material is susceptible to thermal shock, 2024 is used to verify liquid penetration testing outside the normal temperature range.

Aluminum Alloy 2024
2024 aluminum alloy is an aluminum alloy with copper as the main alloy element. It is used in applications requiring a high strength-to-weight ratio as well as good fatigue resistance. It can only be welded by friction welding and has average workability. Due to poor corrosion resistance, aluminum or Al-1Zn cladding is often used for protection, although this may reduce fatigue strength. In the old nomenclature system, the 2XXX series alloys were known as duralumin and this alloy was designated 24ST.
2024 is typically extruded and is also available in aluminized sheet and plate form. It's not that common (but the relevant 2014 aluminum alloy is).
